The Peace Officers Research Association of California represents over 890 associations and more than 64,000 public safety members. It is the largest statewide association representing public safety personnel in the nation.

PORAC VP Mike DurantOur very own Mike Durant, Senior Deputy and former SBCDSA President, serves as the PORAC Vice-President. Mike devotes his time and efforts to strenghtening the public safety family through continued member recuitment and legislative efforts.

PORAC was founded in 1953 as a professional federation of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Our duty is to provide Californians with the safety and security they need to feel protected in their homes and on our streets. It is PORAC’s mission to identify the public safety needs in our communities and provide programs to adequately meet those changing needs.

PORAC works to increase better communication between officers, investigators, prosecutors and judges to ensure proper sentencing. This teamwork helps to keep the rate of recidivism as low as possible.

PORAC has been instrumental in passing tougher legislation for those convicted of driving under the influence, including strict sentencing and intensive rehabilitation programs. This year we were successful in aiding the passage of AB 91 by Assemblymember Feuer and SB 598 by Senator Huff, two bills that aim to curb drunk driving in California.

Our organization was instrumental in the passage of Megan’s Law and, Jessica’s Law -- working diligently to keep sex offenders off the streets.

Each year, PORAC has strongly supported legislation aimed at curbing gang violence and educating Californians in ways to decrease gang activity.

Another main focus of PORAC'S has been drafting and aiding in the passage of legislation to address illegal drug use and we continue to educate our officers on effective approaches to fight the war on drugs.
